More a historical curiosity than a must-have, face-melting metal juggernaut, Zoser Mez was the project formed by Mercyful Fate axe-slingers Hank Sherman and Michael Denner between Fate's heyday and their early 90's reunion. And while the Mercyful Fate signature guitar tone and faint progginess are clearly abundant on Zoser's sole full-length, it is a different beast altogether than its Satan-worshipping predecessor, more concerned with glam/cock/butt/hard rock strut than the burning of witches or the elasticizing of vocal cords. Don't get me wrong: Vizier of Wasteland is still an entertaining listen, and a necessity for Fate completists (see also: Brats). But it is just as cheezy as anything else being released by pioneering metal stars of the early 80's circa 1991 (see also: Vanity/Nemesis, Temples of Ice, or, you know... that other one), excellent covers of Captain Beyond ("Mesmerization Eclipse") and uh... Mercyful Fate ("Desecration of Souls"?) be damned.
