DOMINATION THROUGH IMPURITY - ESSENCE OF BRUTALITY (2005)

'Twas the eve of my 26th birthday, May 7, 2005. The evening's activities included a trip to The Pound in SF (now defunct), to attend one of their first "outdoor" shows, an epic bill that included King Diamond, Nile, and Behemoth. After sitting through an annoying set by the Black Dahlia Murder and a passable one by Behemoth (I liked the swords and armor and shit but the music was ho-hum), Nile took the stage to much applause and fanfare. I had seen them at The Pound a year or so earlier, and was impressed not only by Karl Sanders' troll-like stage presence and formidable chops but also the hulking, intense presence of bassist/vocalist Jon Vesano (formerly of Darkmoon and Demonic Christ), who commanded the stage with a frame that appeared to be approximately 8 feet high and nearly half that in width.
But back to 2005. As Nile took the stage, the first thing that I noticed was the absence of Mr. Vesano, who had been replaced on bass by a small (in comparison), nervous looking blonde kid who appeared to be about the age of a high school junior. The kid was wide-eyed as fuck, but after a couple songs it became apparent that he surely had the skills (if not the presence) to fill Vesano's shoes. At some point in the set, Karl Sanders introduced the kid as his nephew, but maybe he was joking.
Domination Through Impurity is that kid's band. His name is Joe Payne, which sounds super evil if you say it in a death metal voice.

More spastic tech-death foolishness. I'm gonna keep force-feeding you this shit until you learn to like it.

For more face-annihilating insanity, check out their brand new album Masochist.

There is something beautiful and intangible about this band photo that I can neither explain nor quantify.
